Cellular energy production: CoQ10 participates in the process our mitochondria use to convert nutrients into ATP — the usable energy that powers our cells.
Antioxidant protection: CoQ10 also helps protect cells from oxidative stress, which occurs when there is an imbalance between free radicals and the body's antioxidant defenses.
These functions help explain why CoQ10 has been studied in areas ranging from cardiovascular health and fatigue to reproductive health.
Egg and sperm cells require healthy mitochondrial function.
An egg needs considerable energy during maturation, fertilization, and the earliest stages of embryo development. Sperm also depend on mitochondrial energy, particularly for movement and normal function.
At the same time, reproductive cells may be affected by oxidative stress.

Women who received CoQ10 before IVF or ICSI had improvements in several reproductive outcomes, including a higher number of retrieved eggs and better clinical pregnancy rates compared with controls.
The researchers also reported lower cycle-cancellation rates.
These findings are encouraging, but they should be interpreted carefully. The authors noted limitations in the quality and methodology of the available studies and emphasized the need for additional rigorous clinical trials.
In other words, CoQ10 appears promising as an adjunct, particularly in certain fertility populations, but it should not be viewed as a stand-alone fertility treatment.
As women get older, both egg quantity and egg quality generally decline.
One area scientists are studying is the relationship between aging and mitochondrial function.
Because mitochondria supply the energy necessary for normal cellular activity, researchers have become interested in whether supporting mitochondrial health may help reproductive cells function more efficiently.

That research is encouraging, although investigators also noted substantial differences between studies and called for larger, well-designed trials.
For couples trying to conceive, this is an important reminder that fertility evaluation and optimization should not focus solely on the female partner.
Fertility may be one of the reasons people first hear about CoQ10, but its biological role extends far beyond reproductive health.

Another interesting connection involves cholesterol-lowering medications known as statins.
The biochemical pathway used by the body to produce cholesterol is also involved in CoQ10 production.
Research has shown that statin therapy can reduce circulating CoQ10 levels.
This does not mean everyone taking a statin automatically needs CoQ10 supplementation. It does mean that medication history is another factor a healthcare provider may consider when evaluating energy, muscle symptoms, nutrition, and overall health.
Patients should not stop or change a prescribed statin without discussing it with their prescribing healthcare professional.
When shopping for CoQ10, you may notice two forms:
Ubiquinone is the oxidized form of CoQ10.
Ubiquinol is the reduced form.
Both forms can be used by the body, although their absorption and conversion can vary depending on the formulation and the individual.
You may see ubiquinol marketed as the "better" form, particularly for older adults, but supplement quality, formulation, dosage, health status, and individual absorption all matter.
